Amara: AkuaLearn focuses on students preparing for the WASSCE — the West African Senior Secondary Certificate Examination. Why that specific niche? Kwame: Because it's high stakes and underserved. The WASSCE is the exam that determines whether a student can access university. Everything depends on it. And the failure rate is about 40%. That's 40% of students who studied for years and can't go to university because they failed one exam. The prep materials available to those students are mostly photocopied textbooks that are ten years out of date. There is an obvious, enormous, unsolved problem here. Amara: How do you solve it without reliable internet? Kwame: Offline-first is a design constraint, not a limitation. AkuaLearn works entirely offline once downloaded. We package exam content, practice questions, and video lessons in a single app that fits on an entry-level Android phone with 16GB of storage. The student downloads it once when they have WiFi — maybe at school or a library — and then uses it completely offline. We sync progress and update content when they're connected again. Amara: What's your evidence it works? Kwame: Our 2025 cohort of 12,000 students had a WASSCE pass rate of 71% — compared to the national average of 60% for students using traditional prep methods. We're cautious about claiming causation — our users may be more motivated students — but the directional signal is strong enough that we're confident we're helping.
