Armenia's Tech Sector Now Accounts for 12% of GDP — What's Driving It

Narek: This week's headline number: the Armenian IT sector crossed 12% of GDP in Q1 2026, up from roughly 5% in 2021. To put that in perspective, that's faster than India's IT sector grew at any comparable stage. So what's happening?

Narek: Three things are happening simultaneously. First, the influx of Russian IT workers and companies since 2022 created an immediate bump — somewhere between 20,000 and 30,000 Russian tech professionals relocated to Armenia in 2022-2023, and a significant number stayed. That's substantial in a country of three million people.

Narek: Second, and this is the structural factor that will outlast the Russian migration effect, Armenia has been investing heavily in STEM education since the FAST Foundation was established in 2013. Those students are now in the workforce. The quality of engineering graduates from Yerevan State University, the American University of Armenia, and the new tech-focused schools is genuinely competitive with Eastern European peers.

Narek: Third — and this is the underreported factor — Armenia's diaspora is playing a different role than it has historically. Traditionally, the diaspora sent remittances and occasionally donated to cultural institutions. Now we're seeing diaspora investment in startups, diaspora founders who built careers in the US or France returning to launch companies in Yerevan. The Armenia of 2026 is a real option for people who have choices.
